Planned languages
PlayChess intends to become a multi-lingual site - with the help of its members. All depends on the help from volunteers, but this is what we hope to achieve:
Western European Languages
At first, we plan to offer the languages of Western Europe. This has purely technical reasons: since these languages are similar to English and German, we expect no problems.
- German
- English
- Dutch
- Portuguese
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
German. You may wonder that translators for German are needed, too (I am German). But the base language of PlayChess will continue to be English. And I cannot write the pages in two languages all alone. But I will be a member of the German team - of course.
English. The "English" team plays a special role. It will translate my "Germish" into real English, but will concentrate on functional tests. All translator teams are the first that see new features.
Other important languages
Other wide-spread languages use different character sets and fonts. They have to be postponed until some research has been done, but this should take more than few weeks.
Criteria for PlayChess langugages
Any language (even if not mentioned above) may become a "PlayChess language", if it fulfills the following criteria:
- It is spoken by at least 10 million people
- A big chess community exists (speaking this language)
- There are (at least) two independent translators.
Sorry, Star Trek fans: no Klingon!
